My new garden

I guess you can't really call it a garden... It's just three planters with my Blueberry and Blackberry bushes that I had planted at the house.

The Blueberries are doing great despite this poor weather we've had this Spring/Summer. Once we moved over here I started seeing big fuzzy bees on it multiple times a day, so it's nice and pollinated. LOL

My Blackberry on the other hand is not flourishing quite as well. Looks like I'll get 1 berry off it... well hopefully I get it and not a bird, bug or neighbor kid. Also, that's my other Blueberry in the background. Didn't take a pic of that one, sorry.

The Blueberry plants are Organic and I got them at the Market in Fairhaven last Spring and had the deer at the old house eat every berry it produced. I'm so excited to actually eat the berries from them. I'm thinking they'll be great in my Lemon Blueberry Scone recipe!

The Blackberry is a "thornless" that we got on clearance at Walmart last Mother's Day and it's never done much of anything. With all the Blackberries growing wild around here, you'd think it'd produce like crazy!

Silly Chickens

Like most chickens ours have had a decreased egg production through the winter months. About a month ago our really good layer had finally stopped laying or so I thought...
I discovered these today when I moved an old door Josh had against the wall in their coop! Over 32 eggs!
The space between the wall a the door was just wide enough for her to squeeze between!
Since they're all white that means our really good layer has been laying continuously through the winter, never missing a day. She just got smart to hiding her little eggs from the evil egg snatchers that come to her house around breakfast time, LOL!
Worst part is I had to throw them all out since I had no idea which ones were still good.
The coop got a complete scrub down today and all the little hiding places have been removed or blocked off, hopefully she doesn't find another hiding place. ;-)

Egg-celent!!!

We aren't failures as chicken farmers! And here is our proof...
Our First Egg Sept 3, 2010
We got our first egg today. We have three chickens, so we should start seeing three eggs a day real soon.

Store bought large egg for scale
The first eggs are supposed to be smaller and light in color to start. But, as you can see it's not much smaller than a store bought egg. We're guessing this is from our Rhode Island Red.

First pepper!
I picked our first pepper today too! I will probably be our only jalapeno, we have a bell growing too and have seen nothing on all our other pepper plants. I have one tomato growing as well...had two, but a hungry deer got to it. I would have a lot of produce right now if it weren't for those six deer who occasionally help themselves to my veggies. Anyone want some venison? LOL I'm joking ;-)
